A small light spreading across the water's surface

"Before the darkness lifts, a small light spreads across the water's surface."The composer’s official album description notes that the piece paints an inner landscape through gentle arpeggios and delicate harmonies. Amidst a blend of longing and agitation, the melancholy of the minor key gives way to the warmth of the major key at the end; a quiet hope, emerging from deep contemplation, lingers in the piano's resonance.

A melody captured in a practice video

The composer discovered the melody for this piece in a piano practice video from June 18, 2013. Unlike the current rendition, it was played at a much faster tempo back then.

It is a melody featuring very interesting and diverse harmonies. The only downside is that the piece is too short. A duration of around two minutes would be ideal. At times, there is too much pedal resonance, and the piano's lower register sounds very heavy. Otherwise, it is an excellent piece.

The recording quality is clean and clear. The arpeggios are simple, but the tempo variations are effective. It is an enjoyable listen overall, though it remains at a very basic level. The cover art is pretty but not particularly original.

The left hand plays single notes while the right hand plays arpeggios. It works for the first 30 seconds, but after that, it feels insufficient. The melody doesn't stand out clearly. This kind of format would only work with the kind of harmonic genius found in Bach's music.

The arpeggios are beautiful, but it becomes monotonous and tedious after a while. There is little variation. It would have been better to include a moment of silence or a section with a different mood. There are few pauses; the music is in constant motion.

A closer look at the score

In 4/4 with Andantino, the right hand continues its sixteenth-note arpeggios over sustained bass notes. Chords such as FM7/D and FM7/G change the bass beneath the same pattern, giving it a different harmonic colour. The mp, mf and crescendo markings broaden the expression; at the end, rit. accompanies a rising right-hand line that settles on a sustained note.
