A closer look at the score
The piece’s color is clearest when a single note changes a major chord into a minor one: the opening G is followed by Gm, and F by Fm. While the left-hand eighth notes continue, just one chord tone changes, creating a contrast like light shifting across an even landscape. The right hand’s sustained notes and brief connecting notes give that change time to linger.
The right hand becomes more active in the middle. From bar 37, 8va and paired notes cast the same material in a higher register; the left hand also moves into treble clef. At the close, the melody descends with rit. and p into a sustained C. With the title’s snowy forest in mind, listen for the subtle harmonic shifts and later changes in register.
