A closer look at the score
A melody of dotted notes and ties rests over descending Am–G–F harmony. Unlike the left hand’s even eighth notes, the right hand sometimes lands directly on a beat and sometimes stays into the next. At the end of the first phrase, the left hand rests for a bar while the right hand alone traces a broken figure. This brief absence in the continuous accompaniment gives the phrases room to breathe.
Extended and diminished seventh chords enter in the middle, and the returning theme thickens into octaves. The closely spaced dotted rhythms after bar 33 clarify the earlier hesitant rhythm. After returning to the opening melody, sustained notes lead toward rit. and pp. Read alongside the introduction about remembering the past, the melody’s return and gradually fading close become key listening points.
