A closer look at the score

The right hand alternates brief melodic gestures with sustained notes, while the left-hand broken chords connect them. Fm enters the flow of Dm and Em, changing the harmonic color. The score’s mp, mf, p, crescendos and decrescendos call for careful control of phrasing and volume even within short passages.

In the middle section, left-hand sixteenth-note broken chords make the movement denser, while double notes and rolled chords in the right hand broaden the expression. Diminished seventh and major seventh chords join the Gm, C, Am and D progression, alternating tension with gentleness. The figures become simpler toward the end before settling softly on Fadd2.
